Update on Pastor Isaac’s surgery

UPDATE #2 - from Pastor Isaac’s wife Ritha

Pastor Isaac went into surgery about 12:30 pm on Monday afternoon 3/8/10. His surgery took a little longer than expected due  a small cyst near the bladder that had pus in it and it connected to his bladder with a fistula - a tract type opening that the body created attempting to drain the cyst.  They removed that cyst and repaired/closed that fistula.  Pastor Isaac had no symptoms to warn of any such thing.  He said that his body probably made this “sterile abscess” - meaning that it was not actually infected.  This took them a little longer to clear up.

The next thing that took extra time is that they use a type of staple gun to reconnect his intestines to the rectum, but it only stapled half of it.  so Dr. Do had to sew the rest of it together by hand stitches - probably 45 min. longer.  He said they tested it and didn’t see any leaking, but will wait a little longer to try giving him liquids.

Dr. Do spoke to Ritha and Esther around 5:30 PM.  I thought we wouldn’t see Isaac until 8 PM or so, but to my surprise, they called me in to visit with Isaac around 6:30 PM in the Recovery Room.  In the old days, no one was allowed in the RR.  He was awake, but sleepy.  They had put an epidural catheter in his back to begin giving him pain medication while he was in surgery and continued pain medication after.  He was still feeling a lot of pain, so they gave him some extra medicine.  He also felt some nausea, so they gave him something for that.  They moved him to his regular hospital bed around 7 PM.  We were able to let everyone else in the family, come by to see him for a few minutes.

Tuesday- Pastor sat up in a chair this morning and took a few steps after his nurse applied an abdominal binder.  Has an NG tube - nasogastric tube to keep his stomach empty, but there hasn’t been any drainage - they said that is normal for someone who hasn’t eaten since 9 PM Sunday night.  Has 2 drains with bulbs connected on each side of his belly.  They have kept him on a little oxygen with nasal prongs - his oxygen level was good last night in Recovery room without it.  Then his nurse came back and he took a couple minute walk outside his room - did great!  Now he is asleep back in bed - well deserved rest.  He also has the leg “boots” that give compression to his lower legs - prevent blood clots.  He used his incentive spirometer to breathe in deeply to a level marked on it - prevent pneumonia.  Thanks for everyone’s prayers.

Love, Canales Family
